Last Minute Father’s Day Gifts for the Organized Dad

What better gift could you give dear old dad than the gift of organization and tidiness? Here are some last minute gifts for Dad to help him get and stay organized:Screen Shot 2015-06-17 at 7.06.35 AM

1. Maverick AK-01 BBQ Tools with carrying case: Dad will love this set of five stainless steel and rubber grilling accessories that he can use to grill dinner for the whole family (and put it away in the case when he’s done).

2. Husky plastic tool box with metal latches: I got this for Matt on his birthday last year. He loved it and so do I. It keeps all of his tools in one place–including the teeny tiny hardware that would otherwise get lost in a drawer somewhere.

3. Metal two-bag golf organizer: Dad’s caddy when he’s not on the golf course.

4. Armor All complete car care kit: For the DIY Dad, this kit let’s him clean, buff and shine his (other) baby.

5. Bamboo multi-charging station: A charging station gives dad the power he needs for all of his gadgets in one place.

When all else fails, treat your Dad to your excellent organizing services–Mom will thank you.

Ditching the Futon: 5 things to splurge on for your first post-grad apartment

The majority of us are flat out broke the first time we move out of mom and dad’s house. You might be moving for a new job opportunity, to go to grad school or just for your own independence. Whatever the reason, you probably know the feeling of having your car jam-packed with second hand furniture and  hand-me-down household items. It’s great to have family willing to help you out on your new journey into adulthood, but there’s probably some things you’re going to want to buy for yourself once you’re settled and making big-kid money.

An Organized Toy Corner

Because my sister works in retail and her SO is in the restaurant business, my mom frequently watches my four year old nephew, Sam. Mother nature has completely taken over and sent my mother into full on grandma-style “can’t stop, won’t stop spoiling my grandchildren” mode. As a result, she’s built up quite a stockpile of toys for Sam behind her living room couch. And as you can see, it was a complete disaster area …

Luckily, my mom has a highly organized daughter, so when I was home for Memorial Day, I helped her add some order to this space.

Book Review: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up

IMG_3697I finally finished the New York Times Best Seller, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. Friends had been recommending the book to me for quite awhile now, and I finally made a pit stop on my lunch break at the local book store and picked it up. The book was a quick read and pretty easy to digest, so I breezed through it in only a couple of weeks of light reading before bed.

When I first picked it up, I was surprised to find that there were no pictures. I think organizing is a very visual activity and I was nervous about reading an entire book on the subject with nothing to help me visualize the spaces. It turned out that the book was less of a step-by-step guide and instead focused on the bigger picture.
